The Military Band

The Military Band

I used to run to curbside,
Whenever I heard the beat.
Of a military band, flag unfurled,
Marching up the street.
We’d stand at attention, the crowd and I,
Right hand held over my heart.
With the bands siren song,
Urging us to follow along.
Willing to do our part,
Come fight for your country,
The chicken hawks cried.
Enticing our young men,
We give you our pledge.
When this war is over,
We’ll never have to fight again.
World War II will be the war to end all wars,
The politicians said.
When this war is over,
Only peace lies ahead.
Police actions followed,
At a feverish pitch.
While our militarized, industrial nation,
Made its leaders rich.
The president says forget the sick,
And the hungry, young, and old.
While he borrows money from foreign countries,
To satisfy his goals.
I cannot disrespect our flag,
What more can I say.
But when I hear a band, flag unfurled, approaching,
I turn and walk away.

My greatest fear is that the American public has become so brainwashed that they might vote the radical right wing Republicans back in, despite the damage they have inflicted on our country and the world. There is a good reason the rest of the world wants to see Barack Obama get elected, we can't have a continuation of the Bush Doctrin.
